Here are all the official events occurring in Israel. We draw strength and inspiration from their fight for dignity and their belief that love must triumph over hate. This years Holocaust Remembrance Day events will take place from Wednesday evening through Thursday. As we reflect on the magnitude of hatred, bigotry, and cruelty of the Holocaust, we reflect also on the moments of hope, the countless stories of those who even amidst the horrors of the Holocaust were able to hold on to their own humanity, often through the practice of art. As NEA Translation Fellow Maia Evrona said of translating the great Yiddish poet Abraham Sutzkever, whose work explores the beauty and depth of humanity beneath the weight of the Holocaust, “There are poems that are explicitly about the Holocaust, and then there are love poems, lyric poems, and poems that are about the process of writing poetry, and the shadow of the Holocaust is in all of them, but they're also just about the general human condition.” It is an act of respect for those who found strength in the face of adversity, for those whose lives were taken through hatred, and for those who survived these traumatic events.Īrts and culture can help make the act of remembrance a deeply moving experience-impacting us intellectually, emotionally, physically, and spiritually-reminding us of our shared humanity. Remembrance is the act of holding space for who and what has been lost. As the Holocaust recedes in time, it is important that we continue to bear witness to the atrocities that occurred, to honor the victims, and to work toward never allowing such atrocities to happen again. We owe this to the victims and survivors. On Yom HaShoah-Holocaust Remembrance Day-we reflect on the horrific tragedy of the Holocaust in which more than six million Jews were persecuted and killed along with millions of others with diverse political beliefs, sexual orientation, disabilities, and ethnic identities by a hate-driven leader and political system. Proposed amendments to the Criminal Code will also prohibit denying or downplaying the Holocaust in Canada.Īs Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the Holocaust, read and listen to stories of survivors and reflect on the root causes of this atrocity, so that it never happens again. A time to recount the stories of the six million Jews and millions of others slaughtered because of their faith, race, or identity. The Government of Canada will also provide $20 million to support the construction of the new Holocaust Museum in Montréal, and $2.5 million for the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund and Museum Assistance Program. Alejandro Mayorkas Holocaust Remembrance Day is a moment to reflect on the unmatched atrocities and horrific truths of one of the darkest chapters of history. Through Budget 2022, the Government of Canada will provide $5.6 million over five years to support the work of the Special Envoy. To honour the tragic memories of the survivors, and to combat antisemitism, hatred, and racism at home and abroad, the Government of Canada reappointed the Honourable Irwin Cotler as Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism. This is unacceptable, and as a society, we must condemn this violence and continue to stand firmly against it. Jewish communities in Canada and around the world are facing a frightening rise in acts of antisemitism. This is a time to mourn and remember the victims of the Holocaust, when more than 6 million Jews, at least 500,000 Roma and Sinti, and other targeted vulnerable minorities including the Jewish disabled, were brutally murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators.Īs we take the time to remember the many lives lost and acknowledge the courage of those who survived, we must also recognise that there are forces that continue to seek to divide us. This evening marks the beginning of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2022 marks the 77th anniversary since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945, which was the largest Nazi death camp.
